You've Got to be Kidding. Another Oil Explosion in the Gulf? Enough is Enough.

As if the foul tar continuing to bubble onto beaches all over the Gulf weren’t causing enough damage, it now seems that the Gulf Coast just can’t catch a break. This morning, an offshore oil platform off the coast of Louisiana exploded, threatening human lives and once again proving that our oil addiction is dangerous, unhealthy, and definitely not worth the risks.

Thankfully, this explosion wasn’t nearly as catastrophic in terms of human lives lost as the Deepwater Horizon disaster -- all 13 workers on the ill-fated platform were mercifully rescued.

But reports of an oil sheen that has already spread a mile in the Gulf are a painful and looming reminder that America will be cleaning up the BP oil slick for decades to come.

Platforms engulfed in flames. Dirty crude spewing into our oceans. Birds coated in oil. Lifelong fishermen out of work. Just a few of the images that come along with our addiction to burning fossil fuels like cavemen.

Isn’t it time to switch to safer, clean sources of energy that don’t pollute our waters, take our jobs or threaten lives?

Residents of the Gulf Coast can’t afford to suffer any more.  Now is the time for our government leaders to stand up and act for the good of the country – enough with the bickering, deal-making and cowardice. Greedy oil lobbyists and special interests have already spread lies and devastation throughout the Gulf, and now their crippling effects are seeping throughout our economy.

Let’s end our dependence on dirty oil. The Senate needs to get its act together and pass a comprehensive climate and clean energy bill now, before Big Oil’s deadly sheen spreads any further.
