Seth Atkinson, Staff Attorney, San Francisco
I recently joined NRDC as a staff attorney in the oceans program, where I work primarily on promoting sustainable marine fisheries. My love for the oceans started early; growing up in Santa Cruz, California, I spent many an afternoon at the beach skimboarding, bodysurfing, and wandering through tide pools. (Occasionally this was in lieu of class, though don’t tell my high school teachers.) I headed east at age eighteen, earning a bachelor’s degree in geology at Amherst College, and after several intervening years, master’s and law degrees at Yale. After graduating I clerked for a U.S. District Court judge in Vermont, where I enjoyed cycling on endless country roads and training at the local circus arts school. I then dove into fisheries advocacy full-time, spending a year in Washington D.C. before joining NRDC’s San Francisco office. I’m thrilled to be back on the West Coast and doing fisheries work, which I find to be a fascinating combination of policy, science and law.
