Plastic Bag as Art

Plastic Bag as Art

Wandering through Gristmill this evening, I discovered an amazing photo gallery on plastic bags from the UK.

Hosted by a group called The Photographers' Gallery, the show is designed to remind "us of our ability to consume and dispose." It invites viewers to submit their own pictures of plastic bags found in London and elsewhere. One of my favorites was taken by Anna Marszalkowska and features Robin the cat:

I once had a Robbie (who could have been related to Anna's Robin) who was equally fond of plastic, but in her case it was a series of white plastic spoons that kept her amused for hours.

Wonder what it is about pets and plastic? Has our obsession with the stuff rubbed off on them?

As for me, I'm trying to ban the bag at my house. Tough job. Before you even know it, the cashier has usually bagged your items and you are left thinking to yourself, "if I tell them 'no thanks' and take my stuff out of the bag, they'll probably just toss it in the garbage. At least I'll try to recycle it at the supermarket."

Anyway, take a gander at The Photographers' Gallery. Most of the pictures there aren't as cute Robin or Robbie. In fact, most of them are pretty darn sad.

Hah! Luke, it had to be done -- good one.

NRDC meets lolcats -- "when worlds collide" indeed.

I'm working on making stuff out of all the plastic bags at my house. It is a challenge!

Hi Trula. Thanks for the comment. Love your site too. Trula and family are at: http://www.mspmedia.net/2007/06/about-simple-living-green-living-blog.html

Also, did you see my earlier post on plastic bags. I haven't tried this, but looks like fun:
