Media Scan 1/26: response to SOTU; carbon offsets; protecting public health

In USA Today’s GreenHouse blog, Frances Beinecke commended President Obama for standing up for the health of the American people rather than big polluters in his State of the Union address last night; Frances was also quoted in the Florida Sun Sentinel online and the Baltimore Sun’s B’More Green blog… The Hill’s Congress Blog carried an Op-Ed by Peter Lehner, in which he explained President Obama’s call for new “Apollo projects of our time,” outlining ways to break our dependence on oil, boost energy efficiency, and develop new clean energy sources… Peter was also quoted in an article posted online by The Oregonian about NRDC’s purchase of carbon offsets to counter the global warming pollution from the President’s motorcade to and from the State of the Union address… Suzanne Struglinski described the offsets as a symbolic call on Congress to support the reduction of global warming pollution in E&E News…
David Doniger explained to the Associated Press that environmental and health laws do not impose an economic burden on the American people, despite industry claims… In the Financial Times, Regan Nelson called on the federal government and the oil industry to remain focused on improving safeguards for workers and the environment in the wake of the Gulf oil disaster…
