Post-Gulf Spill: Don't Drill the Arctic; No New Leases; Climate Legislation This Year

Chuck Clusen warned that drilling for oil is still risky in shallower arctic waters in a Newsweek article looking at exploratory drilling scheduled to commence in Alaska this summer… In Politico  Eric Young commented on the offshore drilling components of a draft Senate climate bill presented today; the article also discussed a new NRDC ad about America’s oil addiction and an NRDC poll that found Americans want to fast-track clean energy legislation… In a Greenwire piece carried by New York Times, NRDC and other groups were quoted calling for climate legislation to go into law this year… The NRDC poll on support for clean energy was also referenced in a FOXBusiness piece that discussed what the oil spill means for alternative energy in this country… Michael Jasny and David Pettit commented on the flaws of the inspection and enforcement systems currently in place for offshore oil drilling in a Denver Post article that looked at the Department of the Interior’s proposed changes… On TriplePundit.com, David Pettit also discussed some of the potential effects chemical dispersants could have on marine life… An Op-Ed by Tom Singer in the Albuquerque Journal applauded New Mexico’s recent decision to reward utilities for saving energy…
