Dirty Water: Under the Bridge and Onto the Beach

Yesterday, NRDC media teams held press conferences in 5 different cities across the US to release the findings of the 18th annual beach water quality report: Testing the Waters. Less than 36hrs later, almost 240 unique news pieces have been written about the report, circulating in almost 490 outlets.

CBS affiliates in both Miami and Chicago reported on the story, directing viewers to NRDC’s beach website; Nancy Stoner was quoted in the Miami piece, Henry Henderson in the Chicago piece…The Wall Street Journal’s Environmental Capital blog emphasizes NRDC’s messaging on ocean protection legislation, highlighting the economic downsides of dirty beaches…In his second Chicago Public Radio appearance in as many days, Henry Henderson called for increased vigilance and attention to sources of beach pollution in Illinois; notably, National NPR also picked up on Chicago’s “Testing the Waters” story…The Associated Press drafted more than fourteen state centered articles on the beach report findings...

McClatchy Tribune News Service carried an article in which Nancy Stoner emphasized that “Americans should not have to choose between swimming and sewage when baking on the beach."… And the New York Times ran unique coverage of the report as well…Michelle Mehta, water attorney with the LA office, spoke about California beach pollution in the LA TimesSarah Chasis was quoted in Long Island’s Newsday reminding readers that "We should be able to experience summer rains without having to close our beaches."

How do we save blue crabs in the cheasapeake bay? who takes water samples, and silt samples, to detect problems? how can i help? In the 1960's before no till farming was used crabs and rockfish, and oysters were plenty, do herbicides, pesticides, fungicides hurt the blue crab?. Tommy Follin
