A Greener Globe

In the Wall Street Journal both Julia Bovey and Linda Greer discuss the possibilities and benefits that may come from Wal-Mart’s move to set energy-efficiency requirements for all of the company’s Chinese suppliers; the article also mentions NRDC’s work this summer assessing Chinese textile factories… In the New York Times Jake Schmidt explains the role that forest credits play in the two main US Congressional climate proposals… Gina Solomon comments on the benefits of tighter federal air pollution standards that will help protect children from lead exposure in US News and World Report… In an NBC Chicago article reporting on Canada’s move to ban BPA from baby bottles, the outlet quotes Sarah Janssen on the topic of BPA in the US and NRDC’s petition to ban BPA from the American food stream… And the Palm Beach Post looks into new research just completed at the University of Florida that indicates that small doses of a common pesticide can kill baby bees; Josh Mogerman talks about how the research may intersect with Colony Collapse Disorder and NRDC’s legal battle to obtain pesticide information from EPA.

This trend towards putting a pricetag on natural resources is interesting. It was the poet Hopkins who said “Nature is never spent.” Wrong.

BBC news released some numbers that should give us pause. In “Nature Loss Dwarfs Banks Crisis,” (10/10/08) Black says that the annual cost of forest loss is somewhere between $2 trillion and $5 trillian dollars. This is due to a variety of factors: cleaning water and absorbing carbon dioxide among them.

I’m trying to monitor my daily carbon output using http://www.salamanderpoints.com so that the trees have something approaching a realistic chance of surviving the damands we place on them
