Video from Brazil: Jim Kleinschmit from IATP
Posted March 22, 2011 in Moving Beyond Oil, Solving Global Warming
The day before yesterday, we got to go to a park on the northern edge of the Cuiaba region. There the land rises up in a stark, red rock escarpment and lush jungles. Looking back down we could see a patchwork of some cattle ranching and just a little bit of cropping. Most of the land that we could see was still in the forest and brush that a typical of the Cerrado around Cuiaba.
Here's a video of Jim Kleinschmit from IATP talking about the view and how it relates to our trip here to Brazil to understand the interaction of land-use change and biofuels policies.

Nathanael,
Great video. Glad to see you bust out the camera! Amazing view out there, and interesting to see how it ties into your coverage on your trip.

When Searchinger's study first released, ACORE's Biomass Coordinating Council held a meeting to discuss the relevance of the issue and the evidence available. Study contributor Professor Daniel Kammen of UC/Berkeley noted the paucity of data (http://bit.ly/hQ0L8p). He and I discussed the evidence of land use change that can be chronicled using landsat imagery.
Couldn't objective data be extracted from this imagery? What do Brazilian analysts say about the evidence to date?
