Today begins the March on Blair Mountain, with more than six hundred people setting out from Marmet, WV on a fifty-mile, five-day journey to recreate the 1921 labor uprising that culminated with the Battle of Blair Mountain..The marchers include environmentalists, union members, religious leaders, and citizens of all stripes who are marching to abolish mountaintop removal, strengthen workers’ rights, and support investment in sustainable jobs for Appalachia.

You don’t have to go to West Virginia this week to support the march and these goals! Join the virtual March on Blair Mountain and throughout the week, you’ll get breaking updates and be invited to participate in online actions in solidarity with the marchers. Follow the march this week here on Switchboard and on NRDC's Facebook page, as well as at the official March on Blair Mountain website, and on the march’s Twitter feed @marchonblairmt

G.E. has issued a press release saying that solar power will be cheaper than coal in 3-5 years. They are investing billions of dollars in CdTe solar cell manufacturing, and have spent just recently a half billion buying companies to make devices that make talk to and about the grid. If G.E. the premier maker of nuclear plants is saying solar is king, why are we blowing the tops off of mountains !!!! Solar jobs are better !! Solar power doesn't poison the brains of babies while they are still in their mothers womb, coal does. Solar doesn't kill 30,000 Americans per year via lung disease, like coal. Solar doesn't destroy 500 mountains and thousands of miles of beautiful fishing streams, coal already has.

The coal companies down here in NSW Australia are doing the same, pristine widerness/forest & spectacular pagoda rock formations WEST OF THE BLUE MTNS are being bulldozed & strip mined ensuring that AUSTRALIA is the largest coal exporter in the WORLD. Millions of tonnes leave the 2 ports of Wollongong & Newcastle to feed the coal fired power stations of China. THE RACE IS ON TO DESTROY OUR BEAUTIFUL PLANET !!!
