Keren Murphy, Campaign Manager, Washington, D.C.
My mother likes to remind me of the time when I marched into the living room and declared that “I want to be a congresswoman when I grow up. Because that is where all the power is.” I was about 5 or 6 years old in this story but I remember spending a lot of my childhood practicing campaign speeches and watching CSPAN.
My mother also likes to remind me of the time I called home my freshman year of college to say, “Mom, I decided that I’m going to be a grassroots organizer when I graduate. Because that is where the real power is.” I also remember this conversation and I remember her saying how proud she was of me.
I’m glade I made that change in my career goals (of course I think in the years between I also declared I wanted to be a veterinarian, rock star and an astronaut). I’ve spent the last five years at a few different environmental groups working as an advocate and grassroots organizer. I’ve been with NRDC’s Center for Advocacy Campaigns for less then a year but I have been lucky enough to witness that power first hand.
