Yosemites of the Sea: Creating Underwater Parks for Marine Life
Posted August 4, 2010 in Reviving the World's Oceans, Saving Wildlife and Wild Places
For more than a century, America has been safeguarding its most treasured landscapes as national parks and its wildlife in refuges. Now it’s time to ensure the same protections for ocean creatures and ecosystems that sustain so much life: kelp forests, coral reefs, mollusks, fish, marine mammals and us. Currently, less than one percent of U.S. continental marine waters are fully protected.
By creating marine protected areas, we are working to preserve precious marine life so that generations to come can enjoy the wonders of our oceans and the bounty of their myriad contributions to our economy and way of life.
