Nice short videos about NYC's High Line
Posted June 4, 2009 in Green Enterprise, Living Sustainably
The Sundance Channel currently has a neat series of 2-minute perspectives on the High Line, the city's elevated-railway-turned-cool-linear-park. The one just below is narrated by Adrian Benape, the city's parks commissioner. I particularly like what he has to say about the interaction between parks and development and parks and neighborhoods:
There are nine of them on the menu, and you can watch one, some, or all on Sundance's website. Adam Gopnik and Diane Von Furstenberg are among the other narrators.
Many thanks to Ben at TPL's City Parks Blog for the inspiration. Here is Ben's post.
Kaid Benfield writes (almost) daily about community, development, and the environment. For more posts, see his blog's home page.

Well that is one view of course, and though I would not underestimate the need for urban parks, there may, eventually, be a greater need for the old High Line.
For a different perspective see Jim Kunstler's "Eye Sore of the Month" for May...

I haven't read Kunstler's piece but, assuming it's a caution (understated, no doubt, from JHK ;) against permanently converting rail corridors, I would tend to agree. I certainly think the park-based arguments against suburban DC's Purple Line light rail were misplaced.
But NYC is far from rail-deprived.
