The industrial design site designboom has posted an amazing collection of photos of subway systems around the world.  They remind us that civic spaces can be magnificently inspiring.  I only wish they had included the Washington Metro:

That's one of my neighborhood's stations above.  There is a combination of simplicity, grandeur, and elegant calm in our system, and it (if not the trains themselves, unfortunately) has aged extremely well.  But the 20 or so city systems that designboom does feature are remarkable, and the photography is first-rate.  Even moving, you might say.
