The folks at Walk Score continue their incredibly useful and visually compelling work with the roll-out of Transit Score. Designed to measure how well a location is served by public transit, Transit Score uses the same Walk Score 1-to-100 scale increasingly familiar to land use geeks and real estate agents across the country.
In addition to information on a specific address, they also so far have three serious cool transit “heat maps” for Seattle, Boston, and, of course, the San Francisco Bay Area
As you can see, San Francisco is generally well-served, while moving into the East Bay you can see the nodes of BART stations and the web of bus service in the traditional urban core.
My home in Oakland gets an 85.
Transit Score also allows you to compare commuting modes and costs, and can help you calculate the transportation costs of living in a particular location.
As a number of recent studies have shown that transit is safer and good for your health, there’s even more reason than ever to consider taking transit.
