Just for record, ice melting out from under polar bears' feet may not have much connection to climate change according to a recent report. In SCIENCE, April 17, pg 323, 2009, a brief note indicates that a study showed that 75% of the melting of Arctic ice was due to soot that absorbed solar radiation instead of allowing the radiation to be reflected back to space by the ice. So we may need to be calling for much more action on the soot emissions from coal and diesel fuel burning. Controls on such emissions do not get much attention in ACES. Dr. J. Singmaster
